Howdy,
Welcome to the group. As for the new iMac, check out this thread... http://macosg.com/group/viewtopic.php?t=16907
down towards the end.

I'm envious of "eastcoastweb"! He got himself a screamer there.

Hi,djocsion. I am new also: my first post!

I just replaced my iMac G5 1.8 GHZ with the iMac 24" 3.06 Penryn. It is maxed out at 4 Gigs of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. I've only had it for 2 days so I haven't had a chance to put it thru its paces yet, but I did an XBench profile that came out 186 average. What's interesting is that my wife has a Mac Pro 8-core with 8 Gigs of RAM and her score was 191! (I think my iMac G5 came out with a score of 41.)

What made me pull the trigger was the announcement/rumor that Snow Leopard will no longer be supporting the PowerPC platform. I love the 24" glass screen. Personally I have had no problems with reflections.

I will keep you posted as to what I'm finding. Especially challenging is encoding DVD's to MP4 for Apple TV. On the iMac G5 it would take 8-12 hours; on the Mac Pro no more than 35 minutes. We will see with the iMac 3.06! I think it'll be somewhere in the middle because of 2 processors vs 8. I will get back to you on that one!

I don't have the 3Ghz, having settled for the new 2.8GHz, but I can add my vote to the 'this is one fast baby' list - the 2.8GHz C2D iMac 24 (with 4Gb/750Gb) is noticeably faster than my previous PowerMac G5 dual 2.7Ghz with 5Gb/74Gb Raptor.

So that's one happy me.

Welcome to the group and thanks for reminding me of XBench.
I need to re-benchmark the iMac after a RAM upgrade to 4GB. 8)

iMac 3.06 GHz encoding DVD to MPEG4 took about 55 minutes compared to the MacPro 8 core at about 35 minutes.. Not too shabby for the iMac 2 processor vs 8.

Overall, the iMac 3.06 Ghz seems to be an excellent performer built to Apple's usual excellent standards and elegant design.

Another 24" 2.8 imac user here. I have not upgraded to the 4 gig but I too can attest how nice this box is. My G5 is still in use but as a server and light used desktop when the imac is busy. Hmm.. it is busy a lot these days !!
