How much power does a G5 use? I want to buy a Back-UPS from APC and they want to know all the powers of all my equipment. I can't figure out what the G5 uses.

Apple has a list of spec sheets on their site that has power outputs. Not sure if that's what you need.

http://support.apple.com/specs/

Specs for iMacs:
http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/

Scroll down to "Electrical and environmental requirements"

I think she has a Power Mac. If it's a dual, I believe the power supplies are 650 watt.

If it's early 2005 then here's the page you need.

http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac ... _2005.html

Power Supply

Dual 2.0 GHz 450 W
Dual 2.3 GHz 450 W
Dual 2.70 GHz 600 W

Thanks. I knew there were two of them and one had a '50' in them. I should have remembered. I had mine replaced.

You want to get a big enough UPS. I bought a Belkin 1200V 670W for my PM G5.

Thanks to all that replied. I realize now that I did not give enough information.

The information in ‘About this Mac’ shows:
Machine name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,2
CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Numbe r of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 2.5 GB
Bus Speed: 900 MHz
Boot ROM Version 5.1.5f2
Serial Number: --------

The G5 was made prior to 2005

I went support.apple.com/specs and entered my Serial number. It took me to:
hxxp://support.apple.com/specs/powermac ... ac_G5.html

The correct column is the one titled “M903ILL/A. Nothing about Power requirements.

Going down the page, under “Electrical and environmental requirements:
Line voltage: 100-125V AC or 200-240V AC
Maximum current: 6.5A (low-voltage range) or 7.5A (high-voltage range)

If I remember correctly, watts = volts x amps. Therefore:
The minimum watts is 100V x 6.5A = 650 watts.
The maximum watts is 240V x 7.5A = 1,800 watts

Is this correct?

While your formula is correct, it's important to insert the correct figures. :) The line voltage available at most outlets in the US is 100-125V AC, while in Bangkok & UK, for example, it's 200-240V AC. But this still does not represent the voltage used in the formula. Most electrical equipment takes the line voltage and steps it down to a usable voltage. I won't go into further details of how that's done, but I think it's safe to say that your G5 is not going to use more than 600 Watt and is probably somewhere closer to 450 Watt, if that.

So, Bmer's advice would still hold true - a UPS rated at 600 Watt, or more, would be sufficient.
