Every day - at least once a day - the computer goes grey and I get a message telling me to restart the computer. Some times it happens while working in various softwrae but usually it happens overnight when it is just at idle - nothing more than the screen saver going.

I'm at a loss and its getting old - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a pict of the "report" that I send to Apple almost every day...

Disconnect all your external devices once and see if that helps.

Once and then restart and then plug back in and wait for another panic?

Or all at once and then add them back until it happens again? I've got work to do that involves nearly all of the following list and it would be tough to eliminate many if not all of them all at once to wait for the next panic.

I was hoping the info report would tip us off to what is happening - I just can't read the thing - its too computerish for me...;-)

Lets see...
Epson Stylus Photo 2200 - Firewire
Lacie d2 - DVD burner - Firewire
Belkin Firwire Hub - Firewire
Western Digital 500gig HD - Firewire
Epson PictureMate - USB
HP D5160 Photosmart - USB
HP Laserjet 3390 - USB

Wacom Tablet - USB
Kodak Multi-Card Reader - USB
macally multi-card reader/hub - USB
Belkin USB 4 port hub - USB
Belkin Firwire Hub - Firewire
Epson 4870 Scanner - USB
Apple Cinema Display - USB
Apple Keyboard - USB
Kensington Trackball - USB
ENI DSL modem - Ethernet
Linksys DSL Router - Ethernet

The bold ones are the newest additions - but they are all up to date or have had no problems up until this latest panic situation.

Have a look in the Console logs. They can be tricky to decipher, but look thru the different logs to try and find log that indicates a problem. Look for time stamps that coincide with a recent kernel panic. If you find something you think points to the problem, you can copy/paste the log here.

You say this happens a lot at night while the machine is not in use? Unplug all the external devices at night. I'd start with just the mouse, keyboard, monitor and router/modem plugged in and everything else disconnected. If everything goes okay for a couple nights, start leaving one more item plugged each couple days until the problem resurfaces. I'm guessing one of the USB devices is behind the problem.

I would try thst. KP's are usually hadware related. I would say you have some bad interaction going on between some of those devices you have plugged it. Did this just start happening? Did it ever work OK before, with all these devices plugged in? Check system logs like Golfer suggested. I used to get KPs with a powered hub I had plugged into my PM G5.

Definitely disconnect everything except your keyboard.

Boot holding down the SHIFT key - you will be asked for your password. After bootup, restart and use the c omputer for a while to see if you get any kernel panic s again.

If you don't then start adding external units (printer etc) one at a time to eliminate the KP cause.

I hope you don't have ALL of those externals turned on at the same time :)

Ok - I unplugged all of the usb, firewire and ethernet wires from the computer except for the display and the keyboard/mouse - before I left Friday night.

No change - the computer was frozen as before when I went in to work yesterday (Saturday)

Seeing that you have a Mac Pro which compared to my PPC G5, is new and young I get the feeling that this might be a 3rd. party installed software problem.
One way to test this would be to disconnect your internet cable and boot into Safe Boot (hold down the Shift key) as you boot up.
In Safe Boot mode only essential OSX software gets loaded.
If you get no kernel panic screen after whatever time you deem fit then it is probably some program you have installed, maybe the Kensington software, who knows.
If you have Disk Warrior 4 that would be a big help in eliminating any hard drive errors that neither Apple hardware Test or Disk Utility cannot find - this happened to me once. I wouldn't use TechTool Pro for any repairs to hard drives, it is fine for diagnostics though.

Back in the olden days, there used to be a program called "Help!" i think - that would scan your hard drive and figure out what didn't get along with what and tell you to throw out one or the other but don't keep both active. It was a beautiful thing! Not sure if it was 100% accurate - but what is? I'd love to have something like that again. Norton, Disk Warrior, Tech Tool - none came close and I doubt any will.

Oh well - looks like instead of hours searching through a 20 meg HD I'm now get to do it with a couple of 500 gigs or so. Computing - new technology - making life easy for everyone!

Remember when really really big software like Pagemaker ran on a 400k floppy? Efficiency in technology!

Do you by any chance have Kensington software loaded to run your trackball?

If so, try uninstalling it and see what happens.

No - and none of that stuff works with this system anyway. What i had was for Classic. Intel Macs don't do Classic.

Try installing just OS X, no additional software, on an external FW drive. At night boot the machine from it and see what happens in the morning.

My G5 did this when I first purchased it. I disabled sleep mode and screen saver under the System Preferences and it hasen't happened since. I do allow the screen to sleep, but not the computer or hard drives.

Worth a shot.
