Sporting a nicer look, more features, including the ability to check for corrupted preference files!

A source of potential problems!

If you have a corrupted preference file, just search and remove it.

It should be rebuilt when you reboot or restart the app.

Unfortunatly I have on that the app itself corrupts. :(

Does that mean that OnyX corrupts pref files?

I have just installed OnyX and Psynch (?). Anyone here that can explain what the help files are trying to tell me? It has so many options and when one clicks ASP it changes some of them. What settings should one use to make a bootable clone on a Firewire drive? It appears there are several ways to make it do certain things which are new phraseology to a ex-Win98 user. (I just thought I knew a lot about computers:)

And after reading this I meant to say CarbonCopyCloner, not Onyx. And now it is in the wrong topic. Iamanidiot should be my screen name. :-)
Sorry

Thx in advance!

No OnyX doesn't corrupt preferences, it was a trial software of some sort on my machine that kept corrupting it's own .plist file.

For some reason the previous version of OnyX in my iMac can't upgrade to the new one. The "Onyx.dmg" download shows on the desktop, but it fails to mount or open. It indicates "invalid checksum" upon trying to open "OnyX.dmg."

Do you remember what happens when an application is download it on the screen, and how there is a validation step before OnyX opens? Well, that's the step that is failing for me.

I download it the OnyX uninstaller, and it removed all OnyX files I had in my computer, just in case that was the problem, and then started my iMac from Mac OS 10. The following step was to run "Repair Permissions" from the CD, restart, and finally downloading OnyX.dmg. Nothing works, so I may have to download an older version of OnyX and use that.

Any ideas?

it sounds like you have a corrupted dmg, just download it again manually and it should mount

I tried that, but it didn't work. Then I asked the creator of OnyX, and he told me that maybe I needed to run "Repair Permissions" from the Installer CD. Then I removed any files relating to OnyX using the UnyX uninstaller, downloaded UnyX.Dmg and tried it again with the same results.

The problem is that after downloading UnyX and it goes through the verification mode to open, the verification fails to mount or open. Since it does not open, I can't drag or install UnyX into the Applications folder. When I had the previous version of OnyX installed and I set it to automatically look for upgrades, it would go through the same process and fail, and the same happens if I manually download it.

The verification takes place automatically upon the download. I imagine that a "zip" OnyX file would work without any problems. Do you know of any place I can download OnyX in such a format?

Thanks.

Yeah, but I am at work right now. I'll zip one up for you and put it on line for a day or so. Check back here in 14 hours or so say around 1800 East Coast / South Carolina / USA time from now, and I'll have a link that will expire on the 28th.

Thanks for the "zip" file, Don.

I downloaded it, and just like other OnyX.dmg I have downloaded in the past few days, it didn't work. I get the following message: "the following disk images failed to mount: Image: OnyX.dmg. Reason: invalid checksum."

I will try downloading and installing an older version of OnyX to see what happens. Meanwhile, do you know of another application similar to OnyX?

Thanks again.

Ray

Sorry about your problems with Onyx. I almost hate to say this but I downloaded the newest version of Onyx and it installed just fine!

A couple of different apps that are similar to Onyx would be Cocktail ( not free but not expensive ) and Tiger Cache Cleaner.

Thanks. I sincerely appreciate your efforts to help with my computer problems. I will probably buy Cocktail and try that.
