To read the various log files, use the Console application. You should find it in /Applications/Utilities/. If you click the "Logs" icon on the top bar, it will open a menu tree on the left side of the window. Just select the log that you want to view. There is a wealth of diagnostic information in the various logs, but system.log is the one most commonly used to troubleshoot operating system and hardware problems.

Thanks. I was able to view that this morning. The problem did not reccur this morning after rebuilding the main HD yesterday. Here is what I saw in the log. "Dec 26 03:15:05 Macintosh cp: error processing extended attributes: Operation not permitted
Dec 26 03:15:08 Macintosh KernelEventAgent[32]: tid 00000000 received unknown event (256)
Dec 26 03:27:11 Macintosh KernelEventAgent[32]: tid 00000000 received unknown event (256)
Please let me know if you see anything that would concern you.
Thanks again,
Dave

This entry is caused by the Unix command line utility cp (Unix shorthand for "copy") being incapable of working with HFS+ file attributes that are not part of the traditional Unix filesystem. Unless you are using cp from the command line (in Terminal) to copy files, this is probably from some utility you are using, like a backup program.

The effect on your system depends on the importance and usage of the file in question. Unfortunately, the file name is not given here. You may find it in the log file for the specific application.

Thanks again Michael. I will look around a little further. I use DejaVu for back up and as of this mornings log only back up was from one Sata drive to another and not any of the system drives.

The problem has not been solved. Still had kernal panic this am and full speed fans/black screen It is consistently occurring not long after the display has gone to sleep (set at 1hr). I made screen shots of the console sys/log this am and when I get back home this evening I intend to dig carefully through that.

Dave,
Sorry you are having trouble. Might be as simple as something running in the background due to having something plugged in to a USB port?

Hope someone here can help you track it down.

Michael/all
I was able to duplicate the problem last eve by setting the monitor to sleep in 3 minutes. Within 10 minutes the fans went high and system went down. in reading the console log I found an error -9. This has to do with video/color issues. I backed everything up and shut it down for the evening. This morning the 23" ACD would not turn on. the 2nd monitor did. This eve I will swap monitor connections to get a final conclusion and get on the phone with apple care. I will report back once resolved.

Just letting everyone know that the issues have all been resolved by re-installing OSX. I had this done at the Apple store since it was still under warranty and I was not sure of the problem. They indicated there was a conflict with CS3 beta and the Wacom driver which caused numerous conditions.
Thanks to all that offerred to help with this.
In the meantime I ordered the new Mac Pro 3 GHz machine so I will be offering this quad for sale shortly.
Dave
