There are numerous issues regarding the installation of iPhoto 6 from the Apple Discussions forum. Please make sure you have a solid backup of your photos before installing this update.

Some issues I've had are:

1. When selecting a photo, there is a fraction of a second where the photo is fuzzy before coming clear.

2. If you need to use the finder to find photos in certain apps, you may find that the photos are no longer organized by year, month, day. Instead they are organized by year and then roll # which means nothing if you don't know what photos are in a roll. Some of my rolls picked up my album names (which is great) and some are just labled Roll 136 (which sucks).

2a. If I have snagged a picture from the internet and imported it into iPhoto, it is now all by itself in a roll # that I can't find as easy.

3. There are folders under my iPhoto library in the finder that are organized by year, but have nothing in them. It seems that all of the photos are now kept in a folder call "Originals" and one called "Modified" if changes were made. There is also one for iPod Thumbs. I also have one called "Data" that appears to mirror the "Originals" folder. Other than that, the other folders that now appear are bogus.

4. Some users have reported that clicking a thumbnail in iPhoto brings up a totally different picture. Others have reported crashing alltogether upon installation.

Any of our MacOSG family having problems?

Basically, if you have lots of photos and have your own naming system it may be disrupted by the update. I'm just going to wait and see what fix comes out since I have a good backup.

IPhoto has always taken a split second to "focus" the selected photo, I don't notice anything different there except it may be a little faster.

I always use iPhoto to organize and find my photos. I use keywords, date (which is now displayed as you scroll through them) or search for titles. I never try to locate a photo directly in the library. If I want to use one for other uses I drag it to the desktop, or use the "Email" button, set the size and then drag it to the desktop.

I had no problem installing iPhoto 6. I think it is very rare for there not to be reports of people losing their library, their mail or having their system crash after almost any update to any program. Usually the problem is self-inflicted. Often because they have messed with the previous program's library or moved it.

One thing that I found interesting about the installation is iPhoto 6 found some pictures lying around in weird places and put them in my library in a "Recovered Photos" photo. I was pleasantly surprised with some of them.

If you are waiting to install because of those complaints, make a backup of your photo library and go for it!

I had made a backup and went for it... and encountered the problems I listed.

I've never had any lag in viewing the photos. The fact that I noticed it at all tipped me off that it was different. I just don't see why I can't view my album folders in other programs...never a problem before, but now I have to know what roll it is in. Dragging folders to desktops works for you and I, but not someone like my mom who I finally convinced to buy an iMac and "switch" sides because of the simplicity. I'm not bashing, just complaining...iPhoto didn't ask me if I wanted to rearrange my whole file structure...it just did it.

My library is on another drive, just to keep my boot drive clean. I don't think that was the problem. Never had a problem before. What I'm saying is iPhoto was not consistant when it installed. Some folders are labled correctly and others are not.

Yes, always protect your files when upgrading...and I do. Since I didn't see any comments about iPhoto here I just jumped right in. I can go back if I want to, I'm just trying to caution others.

I don't understand how you missed out on the "focus" split second before, I have had it since iPhoto 1.

I am in the same boat as you in being computer support for my Mom and I tell her to keep it simple, use iPhoto for whatever she needs, don't mess around in the library and if worse comes to worse I have her set up to have Graphics Converter come up on a "Double-click" ( but I discourage her from using it).

I also set her up with Pages just in case she wants to manipulate a picture or pictures for printing.

Admittedly drag and drop to and from the desktop is a hard concept for them, it certainly was when she was on the PC! The biggest problem I have in getting her to comprehend that is that she usually fills her screen with one application at a time so she can't find the desktop. Expose´is wonderful for that problem but how do you get them to remember to use it?

We need a Forum thread or Podcast dedicated to tips for helping our parents use their computers!

I know this Mac inside and out...it's babied, backup, cloned and cleaned...

I've updated it since I purchased it this time last year...I'm just saying they should have asked. Think about the pro photographer who has multple libraries on multiple drives and now can't find pictures outside of iPhoto.

OK, is anyone besides me having the problem where the srcoll bar just resets back to where it was when you started scrolling even though your still trying to scroll up or down. Am I the only one out of the group that has issues?

I just got back from a business trip visiting several schools in LA and San Diego. I took quite a few pics, but since my Thai colleague didn't do much of the talking he was able to take a heck of a lot more which I later downloaded. The problem I'm having with iPhoto is that I can't see the pics that I downloaded from him and some of the ones I shot and downloaded myself. After reading this post, I realised that it's probably from dragging the photos to, and messing round with them directly in, the library.

In iPhoto, I can see all of them as thumbnails if I select the library or year icon, but the ones I moved in (draggged to) different folders in the library show up as blank squares with an exclamation point in the center when double-clicked and cannot be edited or reorganized to different albums within iPhoto.

All photos are present in the original folder.

My questions are:

1. Now that I've made a mess of things what would be the most expedient way to straighten things out?

2. Should I backup the original photo folder from the library to the desktop, or other drive, and delete all the garbage in the iPhoto library and then import them back?

3. How do I determine which files and folders in the library are garbage and which aren't?

4. Would it be wise to reinstall iPhoto to ensure I haven't deleted a necessary file?

Do we "newbies" ever get on your nerves? (Need not answer.)

First the answer to your final question. No!

Now as to the solution to your problem, how many photos are we talking about?

If it is not hundreds and you can find all them, I would create a "Newbie Mistake" folder, well I guess you don't have to call it that, and cut and drag them all to that folder.

Then in iPhoto go to the File menu in and select Import Photos. Select the "Mistake" folder and let iPhoto properly place them in it's file and menu system.

BTW, if you go to the iPhoto library that they are located in and sort it by date that should put the "offending" photos at in a neat group to Cut and Paste into the Mistake folder.

I don't know what my first version of iPhoto was, but like Rick said, it's always taken a second to focus the photo. It has done that on every Mac I own or have owned. Never really bothered me as it's still very fast.

Ok, first off we're talking somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 pics. We also took around 60 video clips. (I'm thinking, those'll be cut out and put into a seperate folder for iMovie. Let's call it - "Learning_iMovie" and the other - "Learning_iPhoto")

Out of that 300, maybe a third will open up in iPhoto. That's a lot of cutting and pasting. And I don't think I can remember all the ones I moved in the library.

Would iPhoto overwrite photo data files for photos with duplicate names, or just rename them?
I was thinking it'd be faster to just cut them all out and start fresh. 99% of the pics were taken during the same month.

But then what would I do with the albums that are in iPhoto? (Albums that I made in iPhoto) If I cut the pics out, those pics that were showing would not be around anymore.

I'd probably have to make new ones, right?

I'm back after taking another look at the library folder and comparing it with the photos that aren't affected in iPhoto. It seems that your suggestion, Rick, might not be as time consuming as I first thought.

The unaffected photos are quite few and easy to locate.

I'll try your idea and let you know how it works out.

I think if 99% were from the same month then I would first make a duplicate of your User/Pictures/iPhoto Library so that you can always go back and try again.

Then I would Cut and Paste all the photos from the "Originals" folder for that month to the new folder you created.

Then open iPhoto, File>Import, from the new folder and then see what the results are.

It seems to me that if you have some in that month that are already in proper iPhoto format they should be re-imported without problem but I am not sure so hence the backup!

Once you have them in iPhoto and have checked that they are showing properly then you can delete the "Mistake" folder you created.

Whew! I'm back after a couple hours of movin' and shakin'. Glad that's over.

I gave your suggestion a shot and the photos that weren't showing in the editor before are now opening up nicely. I also find I have a count of 1507 items, 1391 pics and 116 clips-!! The earlier amount (300+) was from my camera only.

But iPhoto did what I expected and did some renaming somewhere. There must be a data file in the library that kept track of the old place-marks for the pics and when I reimported them those place-marks show up as blanks both in the thumbnail pane and in the editor. So now in the sections of my original shots every other space is blank, where in contrast, the new photos from my partner display normally.

The weird thing is that the information pane displays a ".jpg" ending in the blank place-marks and just the title for the good pics; ie, DSC00030.jpg = blank, DSC00030 = good photo; DSC00031.jpg = blank, DSC00031 = good photo. And if I scroll quickly, I see the duplicates for a second before they blank out.

Furthermore, none of the VDO clips show as thumbnails like they used to and don't play, even though, QickTime does open in the menu bar.

This having been said, it's a new day and I trashed everything in the iPhoto library after backing up again, reinstalled the apps bundle from the OS X installation disks and re-imported all the photos.

All is well. iLife is happy again.

BTW - The count is now 1158 items - 1097 pics and 61 clips. Which sounds about right since I started out with 300+ in the beginning.

#1... I have no fuzzy lag at all when i click on a picture
#2a.. I took 36 pictures yesterday and when i look in my "Originals Folder" it shows 36 folders with 1 picture per folder...

My main problem with iPhoto seems to be it will not download the pictures from my camera anylonger. When i came in yesterday from a shoot i had 35 pictures. I plugged into the computer and itues showed 35 pics to download, it downloaded 5 and just plain quit.

I have tried 5 times to download the pictures, but all 5 times it shows 35 pictures to download, then sits there and never downloads even one picture. I even tried downloading them to iTunes on my wife's computer and got the same result.

Finally i gave up and took the camera over to the pc and downloaded all pictures properly, then took them back to itunes on a cd and copyed them into itunes.

Things used to work, what happened!
