I decided to buy a Nano last Sunday, and I'm returning it (and eating the return charge) today (Wednesday). Bought a 4GB (they didn't have 2GB) and the Monster FM transmitter for use in the car. Problems:

Doesn't play maybe 10% of my music, including at least one song purchased from ITMS. It skips to the end
Fastforward/rewind stopped working until I did a reset
After three commutes, the FM transmitter stopped working
Sometimes it refuses to turn off without a reset
Totally froze the first time I used it, requiring a reset

IMHO, it's expensive junk. Turns out that my previous approach of burning a new CD with podcasts/music daily was much less trouble, 100% reliable, and far less expensive. I was also thinking of being able to use it as a 4GB USB "Key" but that isn't practical either.

Well, the FM transmitter problem is hardly a Nano problem and I don't understand why you would eat the return charge on what is apparently a defective unit.

Seems like most are having good luck with theirs so I would take it back and get one that works!

I did give that some thought (replacing everything) however after doing research, it apparently would not solve the skipping tracks problem (which has been reported by others with no reasonable solution given). Also we wanted the lanyard for exercising, only to find out they didn't have them and the Apple site lists a one month backlog.

Sure the transmitter isn't the Nano problem (unless it is caused by a bad connection in the Nano's connector), but as a user I don't care whose fault it is -- it simply doesn't work. And should I try a replacement Monster adapter or go with a lower rated other brand?

Since I have a working solution already (burning CDs) I don't *need* a player. It's not a necessity in my life. So it's much easier to end the pain by just returning everything. Call it a $328.95 folly that can be solved for $25. We still love our Macs.

Well, hope you don't give up on iPods just because you may have gotten a "lemon". I didn't think I "needed" an iPod a year ago, but now I use mine so much it seems like I do. If I'm not using it with headphones when out walking, I've got it connected to the surround sound system in the house, listening to my playlists. I love the fact that I can put together a 4 hour or longer playlist of muisc to play when having a party and not having to worry about it the rest of the night. I guess I could do that by burning an mp3 CD, but the playllists are so convenient when you want to make changes or additions.

Man, I'd never go back to the expense and pain of burning CDs for my car now that I have my iPod. I connect it via XtremeMac's AirPlay OR cassette adapter in my car and there is nothing quite like having every song, every audio book, every radioShark recording, every old time radio program and every podcast at my fingertips.

I do not have a nano, I have a 60GB guy (mostly driven to buy because I had 40GB of audio files) and I love it, love it, LOVE IT.

I had no idea when I bought it how much I'd use it and how convenient it would be. My stack of CD-Rs sits now and is basically used to back up data or to burn things for friends.

I say take it back and get one that works - dealing CDs just isn't fun and takes up too much time!

Just my two cents,

Adam

And, hanging a CD player around your neck at the gym doesn't work too well! :)

I'd like an AFFORDABLE Ipod... the shuffle isn't my cup of tea and the Ipods are all seriously OVERPRICED for listening to music with headphones - I mean c'mon - there's about $25 worth of parts there. I have a Sandisk MP3 Player that works fine - cost me $45! Apple is seriously overpricing this little music box!

I thought it was overpriced, that is why I didn't buy an iPod until just this year. I save money and time not burning CDs and only listen to mine using headphones about 10% of the time. Other than that, it is wired into my STS or one of my stereos in the house. It is extra-cool on the home theater system but I also have this really cool Henry Kloss Model 88 table radio in the bedroom that just sounds wonderful.

OT:

Kloss built and desgined it to compete with the Bose Wave® radio and it just destroys it. It has a built in ported subwoofer in addition to ported left and right hand speakers. You can find the originals in black or off white on eBay still for less than $100 and Cambridge Soundworks sells an expensive newer version with CD player built in. The FM receiver is one of the best I've ever used.

Well the deed is done -- the Nano is returned. My wife is PO'ed about the $24.90 charge to return a defective unit, but frankly I'm glad to be rid of it.

As far as time and cost of burning CDs, the CDs burn in the background (one is burning now), I use one a day, or five per week, and pay $10 for a stack of 100, so my cost is $2/month. The Nano would have paid for itself in ten years. As it is, it cost me one years worth of CDs.

talmy, you're making it very difficult for me to justify all the money I spend on stuff that I "need".

The more I read about your disk burning the happier I am I'm not!

To each his own! (Maybe I'll get you a stack of CD-Rs for Christmas!).

Don't forget that CDs are made out one of ours most wanted resources. OIL!!!

So save the Oil and start buying iPods. :D

Not the same as not using the oil in the first place, but the CDs are recycled. The local computer recycler here (freegeek.org) takes them. (At least they claim they will -- I'm taking in my pile along with a surplused PC, a couple of printers and a scanner a week from Saturday)

It appears that the Nano is very particular with the files it plays -- any error will cause it to abort. This isn't so for other iPods or for iTunes itself. Looks like if I bought a Mini from somewhere I would have been happier. As it is, the only known fix (burning to CD and then ripping back) would be too tedious and time consuming, as well as causing a loss in quality. And all that so it would run on a specific player that probably will be obsolete in a year.
