one of my friends did a DV move of his girlfriend's choral concert at 24fps (film setting) but the audio recorded at 29.97 and so he cannot ge the audio and video to sync...

anyone have any ideas on how to convert the audio to match the video framerate? or am i going to have to convert the audio to .aiff and export it and match it up for him in logic pro or something?

i'm not very good w/ audio (*cough* cory)... but i think you should just be able to "bounce" the audio from logic into fcp or sound track...

what was used to record the audio?

Hmmm...

iandummy: What apps do you have available to work on this? FCP/FCE, Logic/Logic Express, ST/ST Pro, etc?

Was the audio recorded separately?

my friend recorded the video and audio together using his sony 3ccd camera. for some reason it recorded the video at 24fps (what he set it to) and the audio at 29.97fps.

the apps i have are:
FCP, Logic Pro, Soundtrack Pro (basically you name it i have it)

should i rip the video and audio in on my mac (*cough* my friend is a PC user *cough*) and see what it does and then bounce it if i have to? currently i am just going off of what he has told me and i have not seen the problem firsthand.

thanks for your help guys,

ian

Strange...assuming it is a consumer-level camera, I didn't know you could record audio and video at different frame rates.

Anyway...I assume it plays fine when hooked up directly to a television?

Yes, you could import it as a DV file into FCP. I haven't used FCP (I have Funal Cut Express HD). If his camera supports Device Control, it might be easier to adjust the frame rates when capturing. If not, doesn't it automatically capture audio/video at the same rate...ignoring the original frame rates?

Also, why captured at 24 fps?...NTSC is 29.97 which is where most folks will play video they capture.

he wanted to capture it at film quality...don't ask me...i will tell him to bring it over and try what you have suggested...it is nice to know you have the same ideas i have.

i will let you know what happens...

thanks, cory.

Not a problem. Tell him he can always capture at NTSC and convert later to film rate.

Please keep me in the loop...interested to hear the outcome.

oh, i was assuming you were using a separate sound device...

in that case audio sync COULD be an easy fix...

-does the audio actually sound too fast or too slow (does it sound reeeaaaalll slooooooow, or chipmunk fast?)
-or does it sound normal but after a bit the lips don't match the audio (sync drift)??

this is important you specify, as these are two different issues entirely

if its the latter you need to make sure:
1. you only capture 15-20 mins max at a time (edit i admit i've captured MUCH more than this at once without issue, but it's the rule of thumb if you have issues)
2. you have your scratch set to a non-boot physical drive (critical!)
3. that your scratch drive is NOT 70% or more full (drive performance DOES drop at a certain point as platters are filled)
4. there are also some firewire bus issues that are possible on a g5/powerbook if you're capturing from firewire and have a firewire scratch disk...

more details needed!

Also… lets use ‘sample rate’ for audio, ‘frame rate’ for video… hehe

For starters film look is 60i, 24 is australian/uk format known as PAL.

It is bizarre that the camera has actually been able to record at a different frame rate for sound and video, I didnt even know the current range of sony prosumer cameras were able to switch between variable frame rates.

However, if you capture all your footage into FCP, cut out a little bit and drop it down into the timeline and have a play. At the top righthand corner of the timeline there are two buttons, one to activate snap and the other is a link button. if you click the link button you can then move the audio seperate to the video. try zooming in as far as you can and shifting it tiny amounts until the sound syncs, however if the sound is too fast, then right click on the audio and go speed and try and slow it down by point increments at a time, this should solve the issue.

i will keep you up to date...
