Hi,

Purchased a new Tiger Retail Install DVD from Amazon and upon trying to Install on my PowerPC G4 with Panther 10.3.9, computer freezes with a grey screen and restart message. First time, it got to the choose language message, next time it froze at 2% install. Upon restarts, I get the same. The disk looks fine and doesn't appear to be a bootleg. Any ideas, before I return this DVD to the seller?

I even checked the DVD under a magnifying glass and the only questionable thing is that I see it was recorded in Canada whereas my Panther install disks were made in US ... not that it's necessarily significant.

Thanks,

Are you still using your 80gb hard drive with the earlier version OS, or are you able to wipe it?
And/or.... is your external drive firewire by any chance?

cheers
matty

The 80gb (start up) drive has Panther 10.3.9. I want to do an Archive & Install of Tiger on it rather than a Fresh Install to avoid having to re-install a vast number of programs and third party apps and settings. Yes, the external drive is firewire ... what are you thinking?

I was just wondering if the process was getting bogged down reading from the disk, and whether you could clone the dvd to another hd and try booting from there.

I don't know why the process would be getting "bogged down." There is plenty of room on the drive for installation, but it's a good thought and I was thinking along those lines last night. I seem to recall that my external drive is not recommended to be used for start-up, however it has my system back-up on it. I think I'll try starting up on that and installing to my internal drive.

Well, after a 4-day ordeal of clean install and re-installing 20+ Applications (after researching and finding appropriate updates), I finally have a fine working Tiger OS X 10.4.11.

As it turns out, the original kernel panic was caused by my having a SCSI scanner and 2 removable SCSI drives hooked up. Apparently Tiger is less tolerant of Parallel SCSI than Panther is.

I post this in case another legacy user might find it useful info.

Now, if I can just find a (6.1.x Installer and 6.1.x Driver) download for my Retrospect Express 6.0 which came as a free bundle with my Maxtor OneTouch drive. The available 6.1 installer requires a license number which I don't have. I guess Express (x) makes it the free version.

I love Tiger already!

I've spent the last year dealing with outdated and unsupported browser and flash player versions causing freezes, hangups and a general inability to view and use web sites properly.

I'd almost forgotten how responsive it's suppose to be.

Thanks.
