One hitch and I don't know this came about but:

When I tried to install Lion it showed no drives available for installation. The three drives it showed were: Boot Camp, Time Machine and iMac, but the iMac drive was described as "being used as a Time Machine drive" (or similar comment). The Time Machine drive of course said the same thing.

I took a look at the iMac drive and found that, for some reason, over the years a Backup directory had been created on it. Deleted that directory, rebooted and Lion installed perfectly.

Hi All

These are not really 'problems' more observations or 'features' I do or don't like therefore, Mr Moderator, please feel free to move it somewhere more appropriate if necessary.

I have only installed Lion onto my MBP so far and not my iMac.

1. In iCal the birthday colour has changed to grey and it is as far as I am aware not changeable anymore.
2. Resumé is either all on or all off, it is not selectable between apps.
- So if you are working on a document over a period of time it's great. But, if it's a quick change and you CMD-Q next time you start the app it opens that last document and not a choice of a blank one.
- Safari does the same, whatever windows / tabs you had open are remembered.
Therefore, if you wish to start from a standard point every time in your apps (google homepage / blank document) you now have to close every window / tab before you CMD-Q.
3. I'm really not keen on the colours within the Address Book and iCal now, I much prefer the grey it was and not the 'brown' they are using to implicate the 'leather look'.
4. The 'bounce' button / feature seems to have been removed from the mail app
- I found this very useful with spam email etc

5. I do like the speed of the new Safari, it does seem a lot more 'snappy'.

That's it so far I'm sure more will appear as I use it a little more.

Regards

Taggy :-D

The problem with quitting the application and having the document/web page reappear is not really a problem at all. It is a matter of understanding the difference between closing the window (command-W) and quitting the application (Command-Q).

When you close the application, everything will be restored when you restart it (unless you hold down the shift key when launching).

When you close the window, it won't be restored when the application restarts.

The paradigm being promoted in Lion is that you should never be closing applications. Just close windows (command-W or the red button). Lion-aware applications that are no longer active can be closed behind the scenes to recover their memory, and then restarted as necessary. This is exactly how iOS handles running multiple applications. And now it's "Back to the Mac". Frankly, it's something that all modern OSes should have been doing for years.

You may consider it a "feature", but i still consider it a bug. If it is a feature then why did they still leave the "Home Page" in the the preferences? especially seeing as how it doesn't work any longer...

Home Page works fine if you click the "Home" icon. That's why they leave it in the preferences.

I have MacOSG as my Home Page and always have it in the #1 spot on my Tab bar. When I quit and restart it is still there just as I want.

If you've navigated away from your "Home Page" during your last session it's an easy matter to click the "Home" icon.

Ok, then it seems like i am missing something... I am running Safari V.5.1. There is no "HomePage" icon that i see up there in the top lines where all the other stuff is, is there a way to turn it on? And, even if there were a "homepage" icon i still consider it a bug that one would have to phycially hit a button or punch in some keyboard code in order to have the browser come back up with your stated home page in the preferences. And as far as reverting back to Windows and clicking on the little red button at top left, it gets rid of the window ya, but Safari itself is still running, whoopee! at least in winders hitting the red button turns off the program...

I don't like it, if you do like hitting extra icons or using keyboard codes more power to ya, but i liked it a lot better when all i had to do was close the browser and the next time up there was my "Home Page" like it should be. I foresee some hair raising events when some guys wife boots up Safari and it comes up with the last PORNO web site the dude had visited because he forgot to put in the proper codes.

Safari Preferences > General > Safari opens with > A new window
Safari Preferences > General > New windows open with > Homepage

Seriously, you can put a bookmark to any URL on the Bookmarks Bar. Cmd+Shift+H will get you there without closing and reopening the window.

you can of course turn this feature off in system preferences / general 'Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps' but this will disable the feature for all apps

I have my preferences set to new windows open with:Homepage
I have my preferences set to new tabs open with: Homepage
And I have my homepage: http:// what ever i want.com

And the blasted thing comes up with what ever last website i was at when i closed Safari. To me this is not good, i prefer the old way where it comes up with what i have down as homepage. I don't feel that i should have to click on an icon or hit a keyboard code or pound on a little red button in order to have it do that.

As for the bookmarks bar, i have had my homepage there for years to save time and effort, but i don't feel that having to hit the darn thing before shutting Safari off is any kind of improvement over what has worked automaticly just fine for years. You guys like the change, fine i don't and may even start using a different browser, just like i have used a different email program instead of Mail for years. I don't feel like i have to defend every thing apple does. If i like what they do i say so and i am just as quick to say so when i don't.

Apologies, James. Mine is doing the same thing. I'm suspect that there is a setting to disable this in a plist somewhere. If so, it will be found soon.

There is never any need to apologize for not liking what Apple is doing. I'm so excited about the "tabletization" of OS X that I'm shopping for a new PC.

I am by no means defending apples position, just pointing out you can turn it off

James,

OK, after a bit of messing around I guess I have recreated the situation you are so upset about.

One of the reasons I never noticed it is that I always have my Homepage (MacOSG) as my first tab and leave it there. Any other sites I go to I do in separate Tabs. So, for me, when I restart Safari it always comes up with MacOSG in the first tab and with any other additional tabs I have left open.

BTW, you can add the "Home" icon to your tool bar by going to View/Customize Tool bar. In there you'll something similar to this:

Drag it from there to your Tool Bar.

It works OK here, opening with the home page.

The reason is -- you should never "close the application", such as with Command-Q. Resume will have it start up again the way you left it, which is what you are complaining about. Instead you should close the window -- either the red button or Command-W. Then it will not come up with that website again when you start the program, but will open a window on the home page (providing no windows were open when Safari last shut down).

If you never use Command-Q, everything will work as desired, wi†h open web pages staying open (forever!) and closed web pages staying closed.

Once you get use to it, having to be concerned with starting and stopping applications will become so 20th century.
