Hi,

My name's Matt. I'm an Englishman, living in Germany since 2001.

I've been working with PCs for well over 15 years, mainly designing and developing websites and web systems. Last year, I saw the light and finally bought myself a 15" MacBook Pro. Obviously, I fell in love immediately. :o)

I decided pretty quickly to change my way of working and this week my MacMini with Snow Leopard Server arrived, to be used as my main work server, running email, file server, PM server and, amongst other things, development websites for my clients. I build many of my systems using Joomla or custom-build with CakePHP or CodeIgniter, so I need PHP running and MySQL databases. This is where I'm currently having issues. I have everything running, but can't get a connection to MySQL.

I would love to become a part of this community, so don't want to seem like I've just arrived to get help! :o)

Dink Thifferent,
Matt

Hi Michael!

Thanks for your reply. :)

Here's the page I'm having issues with, if this helps: http://orangeasteroid.com/usfoodsight/

In the meantime, I'll try your suggestion anyway.

All the best,
Matt

It was the first thing I found when I searched. You're outside my area of expertise. Have you looked at Apple's OS X Server email list? Lots of knowlege there. You might also poke around mamp.info, though I can't say for sure what differences there may be between the mamp.info configuration and 10.6 Server.

It's above my skill level, too. I can't even get the main page to load using http://orangeasteroid.com
Is there an entry page that opens before the db page?

Sorry, not much help here - but welcome to the group all the same. :)
Maybe, one of our other pros will chime in here.

Main page loads fine here, although it's just a few words at the moment, nothing official.

I was really pleased that I got the index.html page to work on the web, so a little frustrated about this MySQL issue.

Ah, maybe I was looking at it and didn't realize it. (duh) Does it have "Main Orange Asteroid page!" on a white background?

Welcome to our friendly commune! Image

Why don't you try connecting to your Mac's internal Apache web server and see if you can get it to work?

Hi Bmer!

Thanks to you and all for the warm welcome. :D

I'm not sure what parts of your link I should be doing. I was under the impression that with Snow Leopard Server X.6.2, everything was already pre-installed and just needed to be running on my server (called earth.private) for things to work. I can connect to MySQL using SequelPro, see tables, run queries, etc. so I assumed MySQL was working fine or else this wouldn't have been possible...?

I think my issue lies with the configuration.php file of Joomla, which must need certain vales in place in order to connect properly with everything.

If it helps, my php info file is here: http://orangeasteroid.com/usfoodsight/test.php

Thanks again,
Matt

Correct. (I just wanted to eliminate a problem with the new server's hardware/software.) In that case, i would say it's an issue with Joomla. When you loaded Joomla, are you sure ALL the files got loaded?

I've copied an existing site across and tried to manually change the configuration.php file, which is where this error is showing.

I've also put a whole fresh new installation of Joomla on there too, which requires connection to the DB as part of the setup and I get the same issues... :(

Sooooo....

I got it working! The only real issue is that the connection to the DB is made using root/no password, which is far from ideal. I am guessing that the username/password for the MySQL connection must be stored elsewhere than just in the mysql database, which is where I added the user I wanted to connect with.

Matt
