I have generally found OSX, in all its iterations, to be generally stable and reliable so long as you don't start adding hacks, etc. to twist it beyond its design parameters, and so long as you apply updates with nothing else running and no keyboard or mouse inputs beyond those required to do the update. Updates like security and version updates are best applied in combo form from downloaded files. Always repair permissions afterward, including and particularly for 3rd party installations/upgrades requiring authentication. HP drivers are notorious for messing up permissions.
Leopard is the first version of OSX to earn Unix certification. 'Nuf said?
