I have a macbook that has very puny sound. My husband put an external sound card (or something that sounded like that!) on his PC that makes the sound really good, especially through external speakers. I'd like to do something similar with my mac. Is there a sound card for macs? I saw another topic that mentioned imac sound sticks but don't know what those are. Any help would be appreciated.

harman kardon soundsticks are just a type of speaker

you dont actually need an external soundcard for your macbook, you can just plug speakers into the headphone port and the sound will be great (depending on the speakers of course)

I have a set of Bose Companion III's that set me back £200/$315. There are obviously lots of choices when it comes to speakers and setups, all depends on what sound you like

As for an 'external soundcard' for your macbook there is the 'Griffin iMic' http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic but unless you really want an external soundcard it's not really worth it, I had one for a while on my MacPro but it was just using up a USB port. The one advantage it does give you is that you have a bit more flexibility in the jack connection - if i knock the line out port on my mac pro i feel like im going to break something, with the iMic it just moves, so there's less fear of something breaking

hmmm....there's food for thought! I do have a Bose CD/radio player. I wonder if I could hook up to that? I'll have to check into that. Thanks for the help!

if your bose stereo has a line in or aux in you will just need a line to line cable (headphone jack) or line to aux (headphone to red & white plugs)

I think this is what I did. I found a cord/cable that I plugged into the back of the Bose, then connected it to my computer and it worked! I'm so happy! Of course it only works in the bedroom where the Bose is - I still need to get something for the schoolroom/kitchen which is where my computer spends the week (weekends it goes to the bedroom). However, it's so nice to sit here and listen to a decent music sound while typing this!

You might check out some wireless Bluetooth speakers.
