Ok a new day is here and this is what I have seen today. My mail seems to sync to the iPod touch through the cloud (it loaded mail even though the mac was shut down) but I have to manually sync to get the calendars and contacts to sync to the MBP. Both the iMac and MBP are set to sync automatically but don't appear to be doing so. This morning I clicked on the icon in the menu bar and clicked on sync and iSync opened and started complaining that my phone (motorola w755) wasn't ready. Maybe because that icon never opened iSync before? I used to have to go the finder apps to open iSync. if I click on the mobileme sync preferences - it will sync .mac from there.

I have been reading allot on the Web that mobileMe really doesn't support Push well more a real Push system.

Ether Push is hot air or they are having issues, maybe both.

It sure is not what was showed at the Keynote.

Here's another weird thing - I mentioned previously that calendar items weren't happening - I was sitting there and the alarm went off on the MBP for the test appt but the test appt wasn't showing (month view) I closed the calendar and brought it up again still no appt. I then switched to day view and it was there and when I went back to Month view, it finally showed up. I think I need to download the twilight zone theme song to play while messing around with major updates.

Seems to be working great for me.

Sometimes you have to refresh a page but I seem to be able to see "push" work within a few minutes on my iPhone, iCal on the iMac, and me.com.

It seems to me that some people are dissecting this thing too much.

What I care about is that a change on one of my devices will show up within a few minutes on all my devices and that is happening.

If I make a change and expect it to show up instantly on my desktop, my iPhone and on me.com then I may be disappointed. But, if I am prepared to wait a little, which I think is reasonable considering the nature of syncing, I find it acceptable.

This morning I stumbled upon an indication of just how long you may have to wait for the push from the cloud to occur.



See this note for the reference. If you would like to change this interval this hint may do the trick.

I haven't tried this because the current interval is fine with me. If you try this hint read the comments about what to do if it does not appear to work initially.

I find the "push" performance on my iMac disappointing, mainly due to the 15 minute sync interval. If you follow the above tip and set the interval to one minute, I suggest you monitor your sync log through a few events. My system takes longer than one minute for a complete sync. Setting the preference interval shorter than the duration of a sync event may (or may not) cause unpredictable behavior.

I'm with Rick on this one, but totally concede upfront that my lifestyle/expectations are out of sync with today's instant, need-it-now mindset. I suspect my 19-year-old stepdaughter might argue with me on this, so please keep that in mind.

Anyway, the problem that Tismeinaz started this thread with and later added to is a legitimate function of expectation, i.e. MM should sync properly between devices/apps rather than create a Twilight Zone weirdness that needs troubleshooting. But so much of the criticism that I've been reading about MM's push (primarily outside of MacOSG) focuses on the expectation that the "Cloud" will sync all data instantly, which I find, frankly, an unreasonable expectation.

For me, the real advantage of MM's push is that I receive my email significantly faster than I used to. Sure, I wish I could push both of my current .Mac/MM email accounts - all of my accounts, actually - but so far, the one MM account I push has proven almost instantaneous vs. the every 15 minutes it once took to fetch those messages before MM/OS 2.0. (I guess I'm not totally patient...) But email is something I don't generate so, of course, I'd like to get it a.s.a.p.

But if I update a contact or iCal entry, do I really need that update instantly pushed to all of my other devices? That would be cool, no doubt, but at 42, I think my memory's still good enough to remember the change I just entered and deal with it for the time it takes for the Cloud to spread it around.

Just adding my two cents to this interesting thread but for me, the new MM push is working great!

Thanks for the clarification Sly. That explains the occasional "slowness" I have seen sometimes while playing around with Push.

I think it also explains a lot of the concerns I have read about while people try to get a handle on this new set up.

I can certainly see Apple's concern about having several million Mac's syncing with the "Cloud" every minute or so!

As for me, I can't see when, other than testing, this delay would be a concern. If I make a change on my iMac and then have to head out the door my iPhone should be up to date before I get to the stop sign on my street.

It makes a *huge* difference if you make a change on the computer, then log out, sleep, or shutdown prior to the next scheduled sync. In this case, the change never propagates to the cloud or your other computers or mobile devices. Laptop users will be especially susceptible to un-synced events. I don't see an option anywhere to cause the system to sync prior to logout/sleep/shutdown, which would be one way to work around this problem. If I'm missing an existing option, please let me know.

During the WWDC keynote, Apple touted MobileMe as "Exchange for the rest of us." They either have no idea how Exchange works (doubtful) or think that "the rest of us" don't find Exchange's near-instant event updates particularly useful.

If you go to MobileMe in System Preferences you can tell it to "Sync Now" I tried it and had my iPhone updated in less than a minute.

I already hinted to our resident Automator expert (Sly) that he needs to work up an Automator action to save a couple of steps.


ADD: I guess you can accomplish the same thing by checking the "Show status in menu bar" on that "Sync" page and the the Sync "circle" will show up then you can R Click it to select Sync Now.

Boy am I relieved. I was expecting demands for a solution to be found within the next 30 seconds.

No, but maybe in a day or so you can come up with one called "Sleep/Shutdown" that will force the Sync and then Sleep or Shutdown.

Or better yet, how about one that senses a new event in iCal or contact in Address Book on the Mac which then automatorly syncs with MobileMe (.mac) at that time?

I demonstrated the push technology last night with a Microsoft Fanboy and the push works great between the iPhone (iPod Touch) and the MobileMe web client. I'll be ding-danged if it wasn't almost immediate. It's only the Mac that takes a little longer (every 15 minutes if you have it set to sync automatically). Needless to say the M$ Fanboy was impressed. Actually, he then started shopping for a MacBook Pro (I sense another convert coming ).

It's been said that the Mac to cloud push will come with Snow Leopard since it has Exchange technology native in the OS. I personally don't think we'll have to wait for Snow Leopard. I think it'll be a 10.5.5 deal.

AH HA - this is what I have been seeing. It seems that what they said in the keynote and the intro videos isn't quite what is really happening. I don't mind a 15 minute window - I just want to know what to expect and I was expecting what they showed in the keynote and video.
