Man, iDisk lately is all but unusable for me. I go to my iDisk (unsyced), and it just drags. Then, inevitably, I will click on a folder and get the spinning pinwheel of death. Restart my computer, go to iDisk again, and eventually I get the pinwheel. This has been going on for a couple days now. But iDisk has been dog slow for a couple weeks. Anyone else having problems?

Yeah, I've experienced that too. Seemed like iDisk was pretty snappy for a while but has reverted to its old ways again for the past month or two, at least in my experience. When I open it, the window takes its sweet time to display my folders - though nothing that takes so long that I need to reboot. And I don't sync it to my desktop either nor do I have a whole lot stored there.

I've been telling myself this might have something to do with Apple overhauling DotMac in preparation for MobileMe because I've also had trouble with .Mac email during this same time, i.e. servers unavailable, delays in sending/receiving messages, etc.

Yeah, if it is trouble with moving to the new MobileMe thing, well, I can be a little more forgiving. But I hope they do get this all sorted. I kind of rely on iDisk, but I am a simple man. I cannot imagine someone relying on iDisk right now for business or something like that. And if it is a problem with having too much on iDisk, then the hoopla over the increase to 20 GB rings hollow.

I'm with you, EddieT. I've paid for .Mac since it first started whenever that was, but iDisk has never totally impressed me and I primarily use it to transfer a few files between home n' office, to host pix for eBay sales or an iLife Website, etc. I tried the desktop iDisk sync once and found it clumsy and slow so I disabled it. I'm sure there are users that max out their storage and buy more but I don't come close and the pending increase to 20GB is meaningless to me. To me, .Mac mail is worth the cost so I stick with it.

I'm only speculating that the shift to MobileMe is behind some of these performance issues, though. Just gotta tell myself "something" but it seemed like the performance issues hit again shortly before Jobs announced MobileMe a few weeks ago, so it works for me :-)

Well, it looks like you're not far off, cjr. Here is the reply I got from Apple after informing them of this problem.

Quote:
I understand you are experiencing an issue in which data transfers to your iDisk are very slow and cause your computer to be unresponsive. I realize this must be incredibly frustrating.

This is a result of scheduled maintenance being performed due to the transition of .Mac to MobileMe. I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may caused. Apple expects the maintenance to end shortly.

If you are still having difficulty using your iDisk after System Status indicates maintenance is complete, please reply to this message with a detailed description of the issue, the full text of any error message or alert you received, and a description of any troubleshooting steps you've taken.

Hey, thanks for posting this, EddieT. Knowing this does help me feel a little more patient with my current .Mac service.

I gotta believe whatever transitional work they've been doing has got to be over/ending soon since the iPhone v2/MobileMe comes out in about 11 days...

I hesitate to type this (afraid to jinx it) but it seems iDisk is performing much better lately.

No, it's still no good. Spinning beachball of death on my non-synced iDisk on the iMac, and Apple can't seem to figure out why my iDisk does not properly automatically sync on the MBP, despite having me run days and days of tests. So I give up. iDisk was really the biggest reason I bought my .Mac membership, and it is hard to justify the $100 right now.

I was using my iDisk for quite a while yesterday too and didn't notice an appreciable difference in reliability either. Still nothing like you're experiencing but not what I want/expect from this service.

I'm looking forward to the RIM-like push-technology of MobileMe, especially for my email accounts via my iPhone, but other than increasing storage space, it doesn't sound like iDisk is getting a makeover, which it needs.

i never use finder for idisk, i learned early on it sucked, ever since i tried it the first time and it worked great, i've been using transmit, it takes a second or so to connect but never beachballs and it always achieves the max transfer speed it can on my connection
