I am trying to set up another e-mail address on my .mac account. I have had .mac for a long time and have read that it is possible and never tried. Now I would like another mail address, but not to change my main one.....But I simply cannot find where to do it!

Now for the reason. I want to be able to "talk to myself." When I am away, I would like to use iChat with my family, but as we are both the same account, I cannot iChat my own address. Maybe there is another solution. I figured if I could open another mail account, it would treat us as two......maybe not.....Any solutions would be grand!

Thanks all....this site is great!

If all you want to do is create an additional account for use with iChat there are a few options that come to mind and shouldn't cost you anything.

1. It's possible to get a free AIM account, This should work fine. For more information on getting an account here.
2. According to the help page you can indeed set up multiple mail accounts in .Mac (up to 10). It doesn't look like it costs extra but you have to go through the same page as you would if you were purchasing additional iDisk space. Log into your account from the .Mac page and then choose Help. From there choose the link for "managing Multiple Email Accounts".

To clarify a bit.

If you set up additional "Aliases" for your email account that won't allow you to have other than your primary as the iChat name. So, using Sly's tip of setting up an additional AIM is the way to accomplish what you want.

I use the aliases for other family members and for an account I use to register on web sites. That way if I start getting a bunch of spam on that account I can delete it and set up a new one.

Thanks for clearing that up Rick. I don't use .Mac that often so I missed that little bit of info.

Hey Rick, quick question about those aliases. I also use them when navigating unknown waters. I have sometimes thought about setting one up for my wife to help wean her off her windows machine. But if I were to set her up on a Mac, wouldn't I set up her Mail with my .Mac account, and then she would get ALL the mail for my account, not just the alias I set up for her?

Thanks guys. I will look into the AIM angle as that seems to be what I need!

Eddie: Yes, you're correct. If you create an alias for your wife on your primary .Mac email address, then you'd enable your wife to access every email message sent to that primary .Mac email address, whether via the primary address or via an alias pointing to that address, via Mail.

An alternative is to purchase a .Mac sub-account. I have one (and I think it runs me a whopping 10 bucks a year) that, while it's tied to my primary .Mac account, still handles email sent to it privately within Mail.

Eddie,

Sorry I missed your question.

That is what I did for my Daughter and Mother. They both have their own .Mac email addresses and get mail only in their account. Chris is right, it is $10 ea/per.

For some reason they both feel more comfortable doing it this and using Mail than taking advantage of a free Gmail account.
