a friend was over and had an iphone in need of battery. i pointed her to my ipod jack already plugged into my G5. it didnt mount nor charge and froze up the computer. when i restarted it went into kernel panic. i unplugged everything except for mouse and keyboard and restarted and it took a while to get any life and went to kernel panic right away. when i tried to boot to CD it was again a very long time but this time instead of booting to CD it stayed at the grey screen and the circle with the strike through icon came up. [this is different than the folder with the circle strike through]

im guessing it is a hardware problem but i really dont even know where to start looking to fix it. any ideas would be grand thanks

Hold the Shift key down when booting and see if it will boot in Safe Mode. Also, if you have any third-party RAM in there, try removing it an see if it will boot.
