I am very happy with my DP 1.8 which is running great after repair.

I recently added 1 gig more RAM (total 2gig) and am just amazed at the speed increase! It really blew my mind. I have over the years thrown tons of memory at my Windows PC's with never this spectacular a result. Although a subjective observation, this G5 *seems* about twice as fast as it was before the additional RAM. So then, I popped in my new Raptor from Newegg, cloned over the OS - and I'm smilin' from ear-to-ear!

Assuming that more is better, I'm over to Crucial to spend part of the house payment. After all, this old Rev A has 8 slots!

Boy, am I a happy camper.

more is better, but...

If you plan to expand alot, I would begin buyign 1GB sticks. Depending on how much you want to stuff in there, if you keep buying 512's, you could be throwing away RAM (or sending it to someone in need- like me :D) quickly.

While more expensive initially, buying 1GB sticks will pay off in the long run, IMHO.

Good idea (buying the 1g sticks). I was just thinking that. Yeah, they do get a premium on the higher density though. I would like to end up at around 4 - 4.5 gig.

Then, there's the video card. A Radeon 9800 256MB sure would be nice, but last I looked, even ATI is out of stock. Don't understand them. They announce a rebate for Motion users while the card is currently out of stock.

Well, if you want 4 gigs, you could fill em' w/ 512 sticks. I would recommend making at least one pair, preferably two, 1GB sticks, incase you need to expand some more.

Hi
before you chuck loads of ram in the G5 it has sweet spots
depending on what your doing.

if you do video editing then add as much ram as you want and
DVD rendering burning.

for general gamming/usage I don't think youll see as big
a leaps as you did going from 1 to 2 gig.

I would add upto 4 gig of ram and NOT go for the 1gig ram
chips. The cost of the 1gig chips it just isnt worth having right now
whats going to use 8gig of ram?

I don't do any gaming. The G5 is primarily for Motion, FCP and After Effects. The thing is, because of the existing RAM configuration, I'm already getting slot-full. The system came with:

1 Gig @ 4x256 - then, I added
1 Gig @ 2x512

Now, I have only (2) slots left. I'm thinking that I may not need to go over 4 Gig total, so maybe just adding (2) x 1024 in the two free slots.

Sounds like a good plan.

If you do need more RAM, you can just get rid of 256's as opposed to 512's.
