Hello - I have a DSL modem/router with 4 ethernet ports and all of them are in use. If/when the time comes that I want to add another ethernet device, how do I do it? I've read about switches and hubs and so forth and been left uncertain about how to proceed. A related question: am I stuck with the DSL modem that my ISP provided or can I get a different one that has more ports?
Thanks

The best and simplest thing to do would be to add an Ethernet switch. Hubs direct network traffic to all the computers connected to it at the same time. Switches allow for simultaneous traffic, and direct it to only the actual computer requesting it. Switches are much faster and handle multiple computers flawlessly.

Most ISP-provided modem/routers have 4 or less Ethernet LAN ports built-in. I doubt you'd find one with any more than that.

Thanks - Any specific recommendations about brands or sources? Or are they generic enough that it doesn't matter, no worries about working with what I've got, or with the Mac, etc.?

Just about any brand will do. Consumer-level switches aren't platform or driver specific usually. I have use Linksys, Netgear, and D-Link without any issues, and there are several others. As far as sources, any reputable brick-and-mortar or online store...check pricing of both.
