After 23 days in repair, my G5 is back with (1) new processor and a new logic board. Back in the saddle! Yea! It seems to be running well.

This G5 is new to me and I still have the majority of my files from my old G4 on a USB 1.1 external drive. Here's the problem:

I need to copy about 25 gig from the USB to the G5's SATA. The USB drive is recognized fine, but within 3 minutes of starting the copy - the copy stops. I can not shut down or restart the G5 from finder. I tried "force quit" on finder, but it wouldn't relaunch. I have had to power (switch) off twice and I really don't like doing that.

Anyone have any suggestions? The USB drive always worked fine with my old G4.

Have you tried this multiple times? Does it always occur around the same place?

If so, I would be inclined to suspect a corrupted file. What file system is the drive using? What types of files are on it?

I had the same problem when I had a USB drive. I ended up having to drag and drop files in bunches at a time to transfer them all. It was a pain. I sold it and got a FW drive. Never had the problem since.

Thanks for the verification Bmer. I think I may have an old FW enclosure I can drop the drive in. May try that.

Jester - It occurs with different files, different places. I have 15 gigs of MP3's and a bunch of other stuff. Tried multiple times.

Bmer, did you ever get your 2.5 back? Haven't seen an update to your date-by-date post.

BTW Bmer, I am forever indebted to you and Sailfish for all the work you put into this forum. Good job!

I guess my thinking was way off track...but that's why those more knowledgeable are here!

Bmer - Just wanted to report that putting the drive in a Firewire enclosure worked great. Copied all the files perfectly and without "hang". Even able to run Diskwarrior on the Firewire box - something that never worked on the USB. Thanks again.
