Problems with Snow Leopard.

HP printers are not the only devices that do not work properly with Snow Leopard. My Wacom Cintiq is all but useless too. Colors are smeared and inaccurate, images appear solarized and calibrations destroyed. In fact the only monitors that work properly are those made by Apple itself. Many peripherals will not work at all under Snow Leopard as drivers are not yet available. The folder into which Snow Leopard is supposed to gather all non-working software does not do the job, only a few arcane programs I do not know the purpose of show up there.

It appears that Apple, in its haste to bring a product to market, did not allow its clients sufficent lead time to deal with the Snow Leopard code changes.

There are other problems as well. While using MS Word for Apple the program will suddenly quit bring you immediately to your sign in page. When you reboot any unsaved chages are lost. This is worse than a beta version and should never have been released in its present condition. Do not install Snow Leopard! Wait until the bugs are out.

By the way, Apple tells me that there is no way to unistall Snow Leopard without reformating you disk, whereby you lose all software and data. Better have an up-to-date back up.

I think it goes without saying, however I will say it, that cloning the boot disk before upgrading, be it OS X, Windows, or even Linux, is a "must do" activity. Related is not to be an early adopter on any critical system, such as those you earn your livelihood on. It took two point updates before Leopard was running well enough that I could trust it.

I've seen lots of problem reports for Epson printers. Yours is the first I've read for HP.

i would also argue that dev's have had plenty of time to sort out issues with snow leopard, the dev community have had SL for months and months, and 10A432 was released to devs two weeks before the final release. plenty of time to work out any driver issues

i also have no HP problems to report, all my hardware seems to be a-ok (except for my M-Box but it took digi 6 months to catch up with leopard)

One large complaint with HP is that they have not published an updated software package for Snow Leopard. A large set of updated drivers is included on the 10.6 DVD. For stand-alone printers, the included drivers are probably good enough. For some (maybe all) multifunction (print/scan/fax, etc.) machines, the included drivers eliminate OCR capability for the scanner.

I sent a support query to HP this morning, asking for their future plans regarding my PhotoSmart C4280. I use OCR frequently, so I may need some additional software to gain back the functionality that was advertised and included with the printer when I purchased it from the Apple Store.

I know that happened to me with the Tiger->Leopard update. The HP All-in-One my wife had at the time would no longer scan, and HP never did supply new drivers. They seem to only support new products.

I saw a post in HP's support forum that seemed to imply that they are only updating drivers for products that are no more than 5 years old. For simple printers, there may be drivers for older products from Gutenprint or CUPS, but it usually takes a while for them to adapt to a new operating system.

I no longer print enough to justify the cost of a PostScript laser printer, so I replace inkjet printers every year or two. I think it is reasonable to expect HP to provide updated software that covers new operating system releases for at least that long. If they cannot do this, I may have to switch brands.

All in what you read I guess. The Apple forum is loaded with threads complaining about HP support but I haven't noticed any about Epson.

When I installed Snow Leopard it detected that I had an Epson printer and at the end of the install it ran Software Update, installed new drivers and my Epson never missed a lick.

My last Epson printer was a dot-matrix, tractor-feed model that consumed cases of fanfold paper. I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread in comparison to the teletype that it replaced. Maybe I should investigate the newer models.

Perhaps, but I bit my tongue about ink prices!

BTW, my first Epson was the classic MX-80 followed by an MX-100

HP will be providing 'real-time' support for SL issues on 9/9

Read about it here

I bought my first HP printer (all-in-one C7280) earlier this year and have loved it so far, but it's disturbing to read Michael's and others' comments about poor HP support. My problem has always been that I don't print often enough so the ink-jet nozzles always plug up and eventually, even with fresh cartridges and repeated software and even manual cleaning of the nozzles, the printer's useless. So far, I've had no problems of that sort with the HP and I don't print any more often than I used to.

Also, I've encountered no issues since the SL upgrade; everything has worked from printing to scanning but obviously, I'm well within the 5-year support window. I did install whatever is in Snow Leo's HP driver folder, but didn't need to change any drivers/settings. I'm intrigued about SL's built-in printer-driver updates; anyone know if that happens through Software Update?

When I buy a new printer, I always weigh in the cost of replacement ink, which is where you can get nailed, but I've never thought about weighing software/customer support too. Gonna need to do that in the future.

As an aside, when I was shopping for a new printer (when I eventually bought this HP), it struck me just how "throw-away" I and society have become generally... I spent several frustrating hours trying to get my former (Epson) printer to work, but eventually just thought "toss it and buy a new one." My dad and my grandfather would never have done that, although computer hardware and electronics aren't quite the same as the stuff they kept running forever, I guess.

Following the current model, HP drivers will be updated through Software Update. More info worth reading from HP:

Quote:
Important: Please do not reinstall software from original HP Photosmart, Officejet, Deskjet CDs, or HP web downloads from previous Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4, or 10.5. Older software is not compatible with Snow Leopard. The latest Snow Leopard compatible software is included in Mac OS X 10.6, and you will experience the best performance and functionality if you use the latest HP software.

HP owes us an explanation for the missing functionality in the current 10.6 drivers. I have received no response to my support request concerning future OCR capability.

I have first hand knowledge dealing with HP support. They don't know their a$$ from a whole in the ground. (and half the time the machines they are supporting) send an email or feedback to the CEO (from their website) and I guarantee you will get a call or email form one of their engineers real quick.

I thought I had resolved my Snow Leopard issues ( wireless not connecting using 2WIRE from at&t). I thought that was it.

I previously shared my Epson R1800 with Leopard no problem. Now however, while I can see it on my MBPro, any job I send goes into NeverNever land. I've yet to try it on my Airport. But from what I've been reading, that has its issues as well. I guess 6.1 is a hope.
